Space Camp Crew

Space Camp Crew

So you have decided to set up a Space Camp in your school? You can't do it by yourself, you need a team of staff to help you plan and run your Space Camp. The most important consideration is to ensure that you have the appropriate child to adult ratios for your residential on school grounds. Your school will have a policy on this that follows the advice of your local authority.

You will also need to make sure you have a first
aider, people to lead workshops and a breakfast support team. It might be that some of your volunteers just come to help with one aspect of the Camp to take the pressure off the sleepover supervisors. Many of the schools we have worked with have been able to form a team with volunteer teachers, teaching assistants and members of the senior leadership team. Some have found that school parent groups have been supportive by coming in to school to provide refreshments and breakfast for the children.

As for running exciting and engaging workshops and activities - this can easily be done by teachers and teaching assistants from the school and the Activities section of our website is packed with ideas of what you could do. However, inviting expert visitors into school to answer children's questions, give presentations or run workshops can really help bring your Space Camp to life. Providing opportunities for children to speak with expert enthusiasts or people who work in Space Science careers can really help to make new learning relevant and accessible. Many Space Camp schools have been successful in developing relationships with local Universities, Astronomical Societies and local Space industry. Some have even been lucky enough to have these experts within the school community.

Physics and Astronomy University Outreach

Many University Physics and Astronomy departments have Outreach Officers who are able to support and work with local schools on events. Some may be able to come out to school and run workshops, while others might be able to link schools with a Professor who will come and talk to pupils about their work. Many Space Camp schools have enjoyed working with  PhD students who has spoken to children about what they do in their research as well as getting involved in activities and stargazing. In recent years, a number of Physics Outreach teams have purchased an inflatable planetarium which they take to schools as part of their outreach provision.

Not all Universities will be able to help but it is always with asking.
