Space Camp Max is a programme that we are currently developing which involves an annual week long Space Camp at a local Scout camp site. Here we specifically target Pupil Premium learners to develop their Space Camp experience and provide them with unique experiences to engage and inspire them.
The children learn a host of new skills, from putting up their own tents to cooking their own meals. Over the course of the camp the children are in Tent Teams who compete to earn points through a variety of challenges such as shelter building, scavenger hunts, Astronaut Training activities and rocket building. Every night we get the telescopes and binoculars out to see what we can observe while the children become increasingly confident in identifying constellations and planets. We also organise field trips to the National Space Centre and the Challenger Learning Centre.
Children keep a camp diary to encourage them to write about their experiences and we have a bit of quiet time each day to reflect on their experiences. We also take a collection of boardgames for the evening which everyone enjoys.
Teams get bonus points for helping to prepare meals, washing up, tent inspections and collecting wood. Every morning we update the points and track their progress. We collaborated with a local Scout group for an evening of wide games and a traditional camp fire which was a totally new experience for all of our pupils. They get a good proportion of free time to explore the woods and play hide and seek.
As the second year of the project develops we hope to add more resources to share with other schools to help them set up their own Space Camp Max.
